This course aims to introduce the importance of genetics and medicine in population health. Recently, with the advancements in high-throughput genetics technologies, different genetic molecules, including single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), copy number variation (CNV), methylation and gene expression, have been intensively studied and reported as important factors affecting individual and population health. Furthermore, many counties have included genetic data into their large-scale biobanks and thus genetics has become an essential component in public health researches. In this course, we will first introduce the functions and mechanism of different genetic molecules in order to let students have better understanding of the biological roles of these molecules. Next, we will provide research examples and computer practices to let students become more familiar with real data. Lastly, we will introduce currently available genetic testing tools in the real world to let students understand what genetics can do nowadays.
